OpenAI Rolls Out Health in ChatGPT Across the U.S. With Apple Health and Medical Records Integration

The new feature lets American adults link health data and medical records to ChatGPT for AI-assisted explanations — but the UK remains locked out for now.

OpenAI has begun rolling out a feature called Health in ChatGPT to users in the United States, allowing adults aged 18 and over to connect Apple Health data and supported electronic medical records directly to their ChatGPT account. The rollout covers all plan tiers — Free, Go, Plus, and Pro — and is available on web and iOS. There is no confirmed timetable for expansion to the United Kingdom or other international markets.

The feature appears as a Health entry in the ChatGPT sidebar or More menu for eligible users. Once connected, ChatGPT can draw on data such as medications, lab results, recent clinical visits, sleep patterns, activity levels, and workout history to provide context-aware responses in health-related conversations. Users can, for example, ask ChatGPT changes in their health since a prior appointment, compare lab test results over time, or explore how lifestyle factors appear to be affecting their metrics.

OpenAI has stated clearly that Health in ChatGPT is designed to support, not replace, professional medical care. The company says it is not intended for diagnosis or treatment, and that users must explicitly grant permission before ChatGPT can access any connected health information. That consent can be set to one-time access, always allow, or disabled entirely through settings.

A Second Attempt After a Patchy Start

This is not OpenAI’s first move into consumer health. The company launched a separate ChatGPT Health pilot in January 2026, which offered a dedicated health-only interface with Apple Health and wellness-app integrations and operated via a waitlist. Industry reporting described those early results as mixed, with some analysts calling the outputs “lacklustre” — suggesting that AI explanations of medical records lacked clinical depth and risked over-simplifying complex conditions.

The current rollout folds health capabilities into standard ChatGPT conversations rather than isolating them in a separate section. That’s a meaningful design shift. Rather than asking users to switch into a dedicated health mode, OpenAI is making health data simply another source of context that ChatGPT can reference in ordinary conversation.

According to industry reporting, the feature uses newer OpenAI models, reportedly including GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.6 Sol, to deliver more personalised responses based on a user’s connected data.

What Data Can Be Connected

The Apple Health connection is set up through the ChatGPT iOS app, after which users can continue health-related conversations on the web. Supported data sources at launch include Apple Health on iPhone, U.S. Hospital electronic medical records, One Medical, and Function Health. Other wellness, fitness, and nutrition apps — including MyFitnessPal and Weight Watchers — are also listed as potential sources where available.

There is no confirmed Android-specific timeline for the Apple Health integration. Some functionality is therefore tied to owning an iPhone, which limits the feature’s reach even within the United States.

The medical records integrations rely on partnerships with American health providers. That infrastructure does not exist in the UK, where patient records are held within NHS systems that operate under different legal and technical frameworks.

Privacy Concerns and Clinical Caution

Not everyone is enthusiastic. Privacy and security advocates have raised questions about sensitive health data being processed by a commercial AI provider — specifically around data handling, potential secondary uses, and safeguards against breaches. These concerns are not unique to OpenAI; they apply broadly to any commercial platform seeking access to personal health information.

Clinicians and healthcare organisations have expressed mixed views. Better-informed patients who understand their own data could, in theory, make consultations more productive. But there is also a risk that AI-generated health summaries prompt confusion or require correction by clinical staff, adding to existing workload pressures.

The accuracy question is real. Major technology outlets have noted that AI-generated health advice can be incomplete or incorrect, and that conversational responses can be mistaken for personalised medical guidance. OpenAI’s own framing acknowledges this, positioning the tool as a way to help users understand and prepare — not as a substitute for a GP or specialist.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, said in a post on X: “We want to help people understand their health data.”

Short. But it captures the product’s stated purpose precisely.

What This Means for Kent Residents

Health in ChatGPT is not currently available in the UK, so residents of Kent cannot connect NHS records or Apple Health data in the way U.S. Users now can. NHS Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board has no announced integration with OpenAI or ChatGPT for patient record access, and no UK or EU launch date has been confirmed. Kent residents can still ask ChatGPT general health questions, but for accessing and interpreting their own health records, the NHS App and GP services remain the appropriate tools. Those interested in how AI-assisted health features might eventually reach UK patients should watch whether OpenAI pursues partnerships under UK data-protection standards — but nothing of that kind has been announced.
