OpenAI Brings GPT-Live Voice Control to ChatGPT Desktop App for Paid Users Worldwide

OpenAI has added voice control to its ChatGPT desktop app, letting paid subscribers run AI agents and operate their computer without touching a keyboard. The company announced the rollout on 23 July 2026 via X, saying the feature was available globally that day.

The new capability runs on GPT-Live, OpenAI’s real-time speech model that replaced the earlier Advanced Voice Mode in early July 2026. Unlike its predecessor, GPT-Live can speak, listen and reason at the same time, making conversations feel closer to natural turn-taking rather than the stop-start exchanges users had before.

What ChatGPT Voice on Desktop Actually Does

The feature works across Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex — OpenAI’s coding agent platform. Users can open the desktop app, grant microphone access, pick a voice, and start issuing spoken commands. From there, they can kick off tasks, check how agents are getting on, or change direction entirely, all without lifting a finger to type.

That last point matters. Previous versions of ChatGPT Voice were limited to the iOS and Android apps and the web interface. The 23 July announcement marks the first time OpenAI has brought full voice-driven agent control to the desktop, where most serious professional work still happens.

The rollout covers app version 26.715 on both Windows and macOS, according to release-note based reporting — though OpenAI hasn’t published a public version registry, so that figure should be treated as partially verified.

Appshots and the macOS Advantage

Mac users get an extra layer on top of the standard voice features. A capability called Appshots lets ChatGPT read the visual context of whatever window is currently open while the user is speaking. So if you’re talking through a document or a piece of code, ChatGPT can see what you’re looking at in real time, not just hear what you’re saying.

It’s a multimodal trick — combining voice, vision and reasoning in one interaction — and it puts the macOS desktop app ahead of what was previously possible on mobile.

Who Can Use It

Access is limited to paid plans: Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Free-tier users are not included.

Enterprise and education accounts sometimes go through an early-access period before new features land by default, so some organisations may find the rollout arrives slightly later than it does for individual subscribers. OpenAI described the launch as “rolling out globally today,” which suggests immediate availability for most users but doesn’t rule out a staged deployment for managed accounts.

The Bigger Picture

OpenAI isn’t alone in pushing voice into professional AI tools. Major technology companies are racing to make their AI assistants handle voice, code and workflow automation in one place, and the desktop is where that competition is sharpest.

GPT-Live’s design — simultaneous speaking, listening and reasoning — is OpenAI’s answer to the clunkiness of earlier voice AI. The aim is to make voice a first-class way of working, not a novelty bolted on after the fact.

But the rollout has drawn scrutiny too. Privacy advocates have raised concerns about continuous microphone access, chiefly when AI agents can reach into open applications and browse web content on a user’s machine. In workplace settings, questions about data capture, surveillance and who can hear what are harder to brush aside. In the UK, those concerns sit squarely within the scope of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and organisations using ChatGPT in professional environments will need to think carefully about how voice-controlled AI fits their existing data-handling obligations.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, has previously described voice as central to where ChatGPT is heading — though he made no specific public statement tied to this particular desktop announcement.

The shift also has consequences for accessibility. For users who find typing difficult or painful, hands-free control of a full desktop AI workflow is a meaningful change, not just a convenience feature.
