A new genomic test being trialled across the NHS could give thousands of patients with suspected brain tumours a diagnosis within days, rather than waiting weeks for results.
The BMJ reported the pilot, which centres on a fast-turnaround genetic (genomic) test designed to identify brain tumours more quickly than current diagnostic pathways allow. The trial has the potential to reach thousands of patients who are currently facing lengthy waits after presenting with suspected tumour symptoms.
Speed matters enormously in brain tumour diagnosis. The faster a tumour is identified and classified, the sooner a treatment plan can begin — and for patients and families living through that uncertainty, cutting weeks down to days is a meaningful difference.
The pilot focuses on genomic testing, which analyses the genetic make-up of tumour tissue to confirm a diagnosis and help doctors understand what type of tumour they are dealing with. That information shapes which treatments are offered.
The pilot involves five specialist centres: Nottingham University Hospitals, University Hospitals Birmingham, Great Ormond Street Hospital, King’s College Hospital, and Newcastle Hospitals, with a planned expansion to Bristol, Oxford, Leeds and Manchester.
