Kent Police dog Boss wins national award after career of more than 100 arrests

PD Boss, a German Shepherd who began life as a stray in Norfolk, has been named Crimefighting Duo of the Year alongside his handler PC Daniel Carter by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation.

Kent Police dog PD Boss and his handler, PC Daniel Carter of Medway, have won the Crimefighting Duo Award from the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a national organisation that supports and recognises serving and retired police dogs across the United Kingdom. The award recognises a serving police dog and handler team that has achieved outstanding operational results.

Boss joined Kent Police in 2023 after being found as a stray in Norfolk and collected by a dog warden. He was paired with PC Carter during Carter’s initial dog-handler training, according to the BBC, and the two worked together for about three years. During that time, Boss assisted with more than 100 arrests, according to the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, and qualified as a firearms support dog.

Among the incidents attributed to the partnership, the Thin Blue Paw Foundation records that Boss helped locate a vulnerable missing person who had threatened to harm himself. In September 2025, while off duty, Boss helped detain a driver who had crashed into a road closure and attempted to flee, after which PC Carter made an arrest, according to the foundation.

Boss retired in 2026 after developing a limp and receiving a diagnosis of arthritis. He is now living with a family in Carmarthenshire. The Thin Blue Paw Foundation has said it will support him as he manages the condition. The foundation’s awards programme was launched in 2021.
